Values Task

For this session we were given the task of recreating a given image using the colour values method. The method itself consists of matching colours to the original image and painting rather than sketching a rough silhouette of the overall drawing and then building up in shades of colour to create the final outcome.

I firstly started by using a large brush and picked the 85% grey colour and then adjusted the RGB sliders to create a 'cool' grey shade for the shadows and overall silhouette of the robot. I then began to block out the rough silhouette creating large paint marks at first and then going back in with the eraser and refining and adjusting using the scale and move tool until I got to the final silhouette I was happy with.

Silhouette Base

The next stage of the process was to then match and pick the medium shade of grey from the original image which was more on the 'warm' side of the grey colour palette and then matching the original image paint in these sections with the colour to start to add depth and dimension to the piece.

Mid Tone Added

I then followed the same process as the previous stage but with the lightest colour shown in the original image to create the overall highlights of the piece and add that 3D dimensional effect.

Highlight Tone Added

Once I had tweaked and played around with these layers of colours I then added in some finer details such as the glow on the lights and the line work details over the entire image to really bring the robot to life.

Finer Details Added

Once happy with the final robot I then added in the shadow to match the original image and ground the overall character and really help to show off the characters pose.

Shadows To Ground The Character

Overall I am really pleased with the final outcome as feel as though this is some of my best work yet. I am still very new to the whole digital concept idea and am still finding the controls of using a graphics tablet tricky, however I really found this painting method much easier to understand and allows me to create a higher quality and more detailed piece along with really understanding colour and bringing the piece to life rather than a flat overall piece.
